DMC Newsletter 25 Jan 2019

Thank you to all those who have put in the time and energy in making great things happen, again. Amazing things are starting to happen !

The DMC creative tech groups (AI, Extended Reality & Hybrid Tech) are starting to develop collaborative interventions, installations, workshops in response to the Tate Exchange themes of socially engaged practice, inclusion & social mobility.

If you are not part of any of the DMC groups but are interested in developing a new DMC collaborative project exploring social mobility then please email c.follows@arts.ac.uk and we'll see if we can get people together to start a new DMC interest group & meet-up.

BETA Society: Exploring impacts of tech on society Event March 2019 debate & activities supporting socioeconomic diversity & equality of opportunity in the arts

The plan in BETA mode:

We are looking to programme a number of open & informal debates/discussions as well as some hands on activities. We hope to identify a number of provocations/challenges and will invite the public to respond through making, co-production & digital experimentation in the:

Making & Prototype Studio, along side an Open Platform for Informal Debate

The emerging themes/context currently included:

Equality of opportunity:

  • Explore, examine & challenge existing narratives of social inclusion & social mobility
  • Formal models of education: schools - universities - what/who are they for?
  • Future of work: Inclusion, diversity, or impacts of technology on creative industries & the low-wage workforce e.g automation - manufacturing,
  • Challenge societies narrative of success (rather then trying to change conditions of others to fit ours narrative)

Citizen centered innovation:

  • What do we mean by Socially Engaged Practice?
  • Explore & share ideas, methods & approaches for supporting co-production
  • How can we use digital technology to better enable positive change?
  • Support social inclusion, new enterprise models and knowledge exchange opportunities
  • How do we create a neutral space that can avoid structured mandates and support true collaboration and social inclusion?
  • What challenges are there for local communities in representing themselves in a different location, environment and context such as public art galleries, educational institutions or virtual space?

Tate Exchange Project Plan:

Please see below a project plan for how we aim to approach and develop the Tate Exchange Beta Society project over the next two months:

Documenting DMC

Please be aware documenting the DMC and our journey is an important part of what we do and the documentation has helped us gain lots of support and interest over the years. Sharing our progress, what we do with others is very important in terms of visibility. Therefore:

  • Photo and video documentation will be taken at all UAL meetups and shared on social media, within UAL spaces. If you do not want to be photographed or filmed please let us know before the sessions/meeting, we will make sure to try and avoid you or obscure you from view, we may need to include the back of head etc.
  • For meet-ups outside UAL, we will seek your approval and in venues such as Tate they will have their own policy on documentation in the public space.
  • If the DMC are working with non-UAL staff, students and alumni we must seek approval before documenting any activities & events.

Many thanks for your contribution to the DMC and helping us share what we do with others.
