Kristina Thiele

Founding Member of DMC, Professional Photographer, Interior and Spatial Designer, Co-founded artsXR, and Associate Lecturer at UAL

My name is Kristina Thiele and I am one of the founding members of the DMC. My background is in professional photography and in 2017 I graduated from Chelsea College of Arts UAL with a First in Interior and Spatial Design. In 2020 I co-founded artsXR, an immersive production studio and I work as a Spatial Designer and VR Immersive Experience Creative across the arts and technology. I am also an associate lecturer at UAL.

DMC & Me:

The DMC was in its’ infancy when I walked with a student colleague past A216 at Chelsea in 2015. Our eyes caught the newly acquired 3D printer, which Chris had in his office and we soon started testing 3D prints for our latest unit in ISD. Being curious about technology and visualising spatial realm with technology we soon got involved in VR and the DMC testing out bridging art and technology with an Oculus developer kit Alejandro had brought in to try out.

From there on there was no way back and we camped out in A216 on a semi-permanent basis, road testing Gravity Sketch before they went public, participating in Mozilla’s Mozfest in 2016 and TateExchange from 2017 onwards. My final project for my ISD degree was a heavily influenced if not made by my participation of the DMC: building a public space out of Instagram data in VR. The knowledge exchange happening at the weekly DMC meet-ups and connections I made through the DMC made me the Designer I am today and I feel very grateful for that, paying forward now to new members of the DMC, wishing they can benefit equally from this vibrant cross disciplinary collective.
